Why Wildfire Prevention Starts in Your Own Backyard, According to David Brownell

by Binarynewsnetwork
  • David Brownell, a Senior Forestry & Natural Resource Specialist in southern Oregon, explains how individual action can protect communities from wildfire threats.

The Front Line Has Moved to Your Property

Oregon, USA, Aug 10, 2026, ZEX PR WIRE — Wildfires are no longer distant threats that only concern wilderness areas. Across the Pacific Northwest, communities built near forests face growing risks as fire seasons lengthen and burn hotter. David Brownell, who spent nine years battling fires as a wildland firefighter before transitioning to prevention work, says the most effective defense happens long before the flames arrive.

“Most of the important work happens when nobody is watching,” Brownell explains. “The goal isn’t recognition. The goal is leaving things better than you found them.”

Brownell has worked for the Oregon Department of Forestry in southern Oregon since 2010, helping landowners, neighborhoods, and municipalities reduce wildfire risk through forest thinning, prescribed burns, and Firewise community planning. His message is clear: waiting for firefighters to save your home is too late. Protection begins with choices homeowners and neighbors make today.

What Twenty Years of Fire Teaches About Readiness

Brownell began his career in 2001 as a member of an Interagency Hotshot Crew, responding to major fires throughout Oregon, California, and Washington. He remembers the 2002 Biscuit Fire and a 2007 evacuation action in Douglas County, where entire communities scrambled to escape advancing flames.

“We were doing our jobs. When people need help, you show up and do what needs to be done,” he says. But over years of seeing the same patterns repeat, Brownell realized suppression alone would never solve the problem. In 2010, he shifted his focus to healing landscapes before destruction occurs.

Today, he works on watershed protection, forest restoration, and youth mentorship programs that teach conservation skills. His approach emphasizes patience, respect, and understanding that people are part of something bigger than themselves.

“I learned more from the woods than I probably realized at the time. Nature teaches patience. It teaches respect. It teaches you that you’re part of something bigger than yourself,” Brownell reflects.

Small Steps That Save Homes

Brownell stresses that wildfire readiness does not require expensive renovations or specialized knowledge. Simple actions like clearing gutters, trimming branches near roofs, and creating defensible space around structures make a measurable difference.

He points to the power of community coordination. Neighbors who work together to clear brush along shared property lines, organize chipper days, or develop evacuation plans create safer blocks and stronger networks.

“That period taught me that people depend on each other. You learn pretty quickly that showing up matters,” Brownell says, referring to his early firefighting years.

He encourages residents to contact local forestry departments, fire districts, and cooperative extension offices. Many offer free home assessments, grant funding for fuel reduction, and training in fire-safe landscaping.

Local Action List

Here are ten steps you can take this week to reduce wildfire risk:

  1. Clear dead leaves, needles, and debris from gutters, roofs, and decks.

  2. Trim tree branches within ten feet of your roof and chimney.

  3. Remove brush, woodpiles, and flammable materials within thirty feet of your home.

  4. Replace wood shake roofs or cover them with fire-resistant materials.

  5. Install metal mesh screens over vents to prevent ember entry.

  6. Create a home inventory with photos of valuables for insurance purposes.

  7. Assemble an emergency kit with water, medications, documents, and pet supplies.

  8. Map two evacuation routes from your neighborhood and share them with your family.

  9. Talk to your neighbors about organizing a community cleanup day.

  10. Schedule a free Firewise assessment with your local fire district or forestry office.

Finding Trustworthy Local Resources

Start with your county forestry department or regional Oregon Department of Forestry office. Many provide free site visits and personalized recommendations. Fire districts often host workshops on defensible space, evacuation planning, and fire-safe landscaping.

Cooperative extension offices affiliated with universities offer research-based guidance on native plants, soil health, and sustainable land management. Look for Firewise USA recognition programs that help neighborhoods earn certification and access grants.

Local conservation districts, watershed councils, and forest collaboratives also provide hands-on support, volunteer opportunities, and connections to experienced mentors.

Take One Step Today

Wildfire prevention is not someone else’s responsibility. It starts with individuals who care enough to act before the flames appear. Whether you clear a gutter, talk to a neighbor, or schedule a home assessment, one small step today can protect your family, your home, and your community tomorrow.
